Will India get a waiver from the US to buy oil from Iran?

India is reportedly pushing Washington for an exemption to buy Iranian crude as part of its broader energy security strategy amid tightening geopolitical constraints. According to sources, New Delhi conveyed to the Trump administration that while it remains committed to cutting its reliance on Russian oil, such reductions are only feasible if alternative sanctioned suppliers like Iran and Venezuela are brought back into the equation. Officials argued that shutting India off from all three—Russia, Iran, and Venezuela—would create a supply shock that risks sending global energy prices soaring. With nearly 90% of its oil demand dependent on imports, India positioned its case as not just an economic necessity but also a stabilizing factor for global markets. At the same time, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal signaled intent to diversify by expanding purchases of American oil and liquefied natural gas, presenting India as both a pragmatic partner and a crucial market.
