Ministry of Commerce sees success as India's exports surge
India’s global trade footprint experienced a significant expansion between April and September 2026, as total merchandise exports rose 18.5% to nearly $260 billion. Driven by a strategic push to diversify and secure new markets, shipments to Africa and Southeast Asia surged by 47% and 56% respectively. Concurrently, exports to West Asia have begun a steady recovery, rebounding from recent conflict-related disruptions.
Crucially, this robust growth has been heavily influenced by mounting trade tensions with Washington. Indian exporters frontloaded their shipments to the United States in September—sparking a 48% jump in US-bound exports—to deliver orders ahead of threatened US tariffs. Ultimately, India's proactive diversification into emerging markets provides a vital buffer as shifting American trade policies threaten to reshape global supply chains.
