Counter-Transparency Line Up
There is fear in the country – said a prominent industrialist the other day. Prior to him was another one casting such aspersions on the government. They were among a bunch of more than 100 letter writers canvassing restoration of OIC status for a person who had indulged in crass anti-India propaganda targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The line up would have been missed except that the industrialist over-stepped by comparing the previous government. He must, because in the previous dispensation appointments to sensitive positions were not decided by the Cabinet but by the industrialists, Swamis, middlemen and women running Lobbying companies. When the country was being openly looted and the loot was being shared among the nexus of politician-bureaucracy-business (refer to the Vohra committee report), there indeed was no fear. Anybody showing the rule book was severely punished- there are methods of punishment without external injury on the law-abiding public servant. The political change in Maharashtra is only the first manifestation of such a line up. More when it is claimed to be the game changer at the all India level. They should know better. The citizens looking for transparency are only concerned if they will see the days of the licence-quota-permit raj once again and read newspaper headlines about scams like Bofors, Augusta, CWG, 2G, Coalgate, Adarsh etc.? Afterall the losses from the demonetisation have also to be recovered. And from whom if not the ordinary citizens ? The economics is transparent in such a system: rob the citizens to pay the industrialists contributing liberally to the mounting NPAs of the banks, making PSUs sick and vacating their lucrative business space for exploitation by the private sector, destroying the small scale sector by merging it with the M sector, stalling modernization in the industrial sector by thwarting attempts of rivals for import of technology and capital goods, staining foreign collaborations (financial, technical and joint ventures) with corruption charges and playing with the national economy under the show of shadow industrialisation. I would welcome the industry to be genuinely competitive so that it also owns international quality brands. The complaining industrialist has been marketing extremely poor quality products like electrical water heating rods/geysers which were below the quality standards set by the Electrical Goods Quality Control Order thereby endangering human safety and could have been heavily punished. His industry must have supplied these geysers in millions to government departments over the decades. For a show his industry had a Fair Business Practice cell, which hardly ever responded to the consumer complaints. It is the fundamental right of the people to expect Fair Business Practices from the industry. They cannot be allowed to export poor quality products to friendly developing countries and bring a bad name to the country. The Prime Minister should take this counter transparency line up seriously. He has been voted to power to safeguard public interest from marauders and looters. He must move fast on the economic front. Instead of band-aid treatment he should provide specialist treatment to the economy which has been demanding professional care. If need be, he should shuffle his cabinet and put an expert as the finance minister. Similar treatment is required for industry, commerce and other economic ministries. The country can ill afford sloth in the economy.
